Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract party has nominated Mesrop Mesropian, a former regional governor, as a potential candidate for the post of head of the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC), a position that has remained vacant for nearly a month.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian made this announcement following a meeting of the party’s board late on Tuesday.

The PSRC chairman’s position has been vacant since October 10, when Garegin Baghramian, who had held the post since 2019, resigned amid frequent power outages in Yerevan and other parts of the country, which were blamed on his activities.

Two other senior officials – a deputy economy minister and a deputy infrastructure minister – also resigned shortly afterwards over issues in Armenia’s energy system.

Mesropian, a former governor of Armenia’s Kotayk province who also previously served as a PSRC member, was recommended by Civil Contract’s board as a candidate to replace Baghramian.

The candidacy still needs to be reviewed by the government before it is sumbitted to parliament for final approval.

In addition, at the party board meeting, Civil Contract’s parliamentary faction proposed the candidacy of lawyer Alexander Sirunian for a seat on the Supreme Judicial Council.
