After remaining vacant for nearly a month, the post of Armenia’s justice minister will soon be filled as the country’s ruling party has finally nominated a candidate.

Following a meeting of the Civil Contract party’s board late on Tuesday, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian, the leader of the party, wrote on Facebook that the board has nominated Srbuhi Galian, who currently serves as deputy prosecutor general, to be appointed justice minister.

It is reported that Galian was selected out of five candidates that also included Armenia’s representative for international legal issues Yeghishe Kirakosian and former acting chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council Gagik Jhangirian.

Civil Contract has been looking for a candidate for the position of justice minister to replace Grigor Minasian who stepped down on October 1, a week after more than a dozen pro-government lawmakers signed a petition calling on Pashinian to sack him. The lawmakers said then that, unlike Minasian, the new minister must be affiliated with the ruling party.

Galian, 32, has served as a deputy prosecutor general in charge of coordinating functions related to illegal property confiscation. She was appointed to this position in September 2020 after serving as deputy minister of justice for about a year.
