Armenia has called on European businesspeople to invest in its economy, giving assurances that such investments are the easiest way for cooperation with other former Soviet states.
As part of his official visit to the Czech Republic, on Friday Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian attended a Czech-Armenian business forum at the Ministry of Trade and Industry. In his speech, the Armenian leader said that the developments of recent months in Armenia have created more favorable conditions for entrepreneurship, considering Armenia’s expected membership in the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.
In Sarkisian’s view, by joining the Russian-led trade bloc Armenia joins a 200-million-strong market. “It means that we can be a bridge, on the one hand having free movement of goods, labor, finance with the Customs Union, and on the other hand having preferential trade terms with EU member states,” he underscored.
President Sarkisian pledged Armenia’s attention to Czech investments in the country. Among the Czech products he singled out beer, noting that having only one brewery in Armenia is “too few”.
There are about two dozen not so large companies with Czech capital operating in Armenia today.
Representatives of 22 Armenian companies representing such industries as tourism, construction, natural resources, agriculture, industrial chemistry, jewelry, security systems, pharmaceuticals and others attended the business forum in Prague.
Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Czech Republic Frantisek Masopust said representatives of about 90 companies had expressed their desire to get acquainted with Armenia’s business environment through the forum.
