Syrian Airline Resumes Armenia Flights

Syria’s national airline has resumed weekly flights to Armenia, mainly used by ethnic Armenians fleeing the country, after an almost one-month pause apparently connected with an upsurge in fighting in Aleppo.

Nevertheless, the company is apparently still unable to use the international airport in Syria’s largest city. A Syrian Air plane flew to Yerevan’s Zvartnots airport late on Tuesday from Latakia, another major Syrian city that has not been affected by the conflict as severely as Aleppo.

The Syrian Air office in Yerevan told RFE/RL’s Armenian service (Azatutyun.am) that the plane brought to 55 people to Armenia and flew 22 others back to Syria. The next flight to Yerevan will also be carried out from Latakia, it said.

Thousands of Syrian nationals, virtually all of them of Armenian descent, have fled to Armenia by air since the outbreak of the bloody conflict in the Middle Eastern nation nearly two years ago. Armenia’s Armavia carrier ended its once-a-week flights to Aleppo in September for security reasons.
