“Hayots Ashkhar” presents comments of former Armenian president Robert Kocharian’s office on the recent motion at the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) regarding the involvement of the army in the suppression of opposition protests in the wake of the 2008 presidential election.
“[Head of Kocharian’s office] Victor Soghomonian said in comments to Mediamax news agency that the actions of the defense minister should be considered in the context of those real threats to the security and territorial integrity of Armenia that were present in January-March 2008. Azerbaijan’s aggressive statements and the situation along the line of contact between the armed forces testified to Azerbaijan’s preparations to take advantage of the situation that would be created in Armenia for the purpose of solving the Karabakh problem militarily,” the paper writes.
“Chorrord Inknishkhanutyun” writes on the upcoming rally of the opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK). “What will be its main goal? The thing is that the public rally will have no concrete goal. The authorities have set themselves the task of showing that people are inert, there is no resistance anymore and they will do whatever they want. And the HAK pursues the task of showing that it is not so, that there is still ‘people’ in Armenia and these people are ready to struggle for their rights.”
“Aravot” ridicules the ‘local eschatology’ about an imminent ‘Karabakh handover’ that sometimes has ‘a scientific form’, as in: “Our reliable reports indicate that pressures on the Armenian leadership will increase in the coming weeks as a result of which the Armenian side will agree to unilateral concessions.” “And these ‘coming weeks’ already last for 20 years,” the paper comments tartly.
“Iravunk” presents comments by former deputy defense minister Artur Aghabekian on the recent growing dissatisfaction of the Karabakh leadership over Armenia’s representing Stepanakert in talks with Azerbaijan, something that wasn’t the case in the past.
“The leadership and people of Artsakh (Karabakh) see the defense of Artsakh within themselves. They do not see an impasse in the process and are trying to use the protracted process for the purpose of building new security systems, such as raising the living standards of the population, developing economy and improving demography in Artsakh, strengthening the army and improving the mood of the people… That is, time in Artsakh is being used properly,” the general says.
