The chief prosecutor of Yerevan’s central administrative district, Aleksan Andreasian, was dismissed on Wednesday after it emerged that he tried oversee a criminal investigation into an assault allegedly involving his son. Law-enforcement authorities gave few details of the crime, saying only that the young man is suspected of participating in an assault in the city center that caused “severe injuries.”
Under the rules set by the Office of the Prosecutor-General, Andreasian had to inform his superiors about the conflict of interest and make sure that the criminal investigation is not conducted by the police department of the central Kentron district overseen by him.
Sona Truzian, a spokeswoman for the law-enforcement agency, told RFE/RL that he failed to provide such information to Prosecutor-General Aghvan Hovsepian. She said Andreasian also violated the conflict of interest rules by letting the Kentron police take over the inquiry.
The chief of the Kentron police, Artur Mehrabian, was also fired on Wednesday. The national police service gave no reason for the dismissal.
