“Hayk” claims that chances of Nagorno-Karabakh’s direct participation in Armenian-Azerbaijani peace talks have decreased as a result of its July 19 presidential election. The paper says Karabakh’s President-Elect Bako Sahakian is too inexperienced in diplomacy to join the negotiating process. “Bako Sahakian has for many years worked in the National Security Service and has not dealt with foreign policy issues. Unlike Mayilian, Deputy Foreign Minister Masis Mayilian is much more informed about the Karabakh negotiating process, even more informed than Nagorno-Karabakh’s Foreign Minister Georgi Petrosian.”
“Aravot” reports that Deputy Defense Minister Manvel Grigorian’s son Karen and a group of his friends beat up a man at Yerevan’s Zvartnots airport on July 22. The paper says the 33-year-old man, who works for Armenia’s National Rescue Service, was hospitalized with severe injuries and remains in intensive care. It says Karlen Galstian was assaulted because Grigorian did not like the way he “looked at General Manvel’s daughter-in-law.”
“Zhamanak Yerevan” reports that a woman that owned two apartments in Yerevan has died “in quite uncertain circumstances” before bequeathing her properties to the state. The paper notes that one of those apartments, which is located in the city center, has been donated to a pop singer by the local government. It says the latter has refused to give reasons for the extremely lavish gift.
“Today Armenia’s capital resembles a huge and untidy construction site,” writes “Taregir.” “All around are traffic jams, and there is real chaos in the capital.” The paper links the roadworks, mostly funded by the state, with Armenia’s forthcoming presidential elections. “They probably want to show the people that the country is being built and developed. But the people look on and don’t see anything. More precisely, they see that these authorities are doing everything to make their plight even more unbearable.”
