“[Environment Minister] Vartan Ayvazian becomes active only in cases where there is a need to inflict damage on Armenia’s nature,” attacks “Chorrord Ishkhanutyun.” “There was an attempt to cut down the Shikahogh forest and he popped up to state that he is in favor [of doing that],” writes the paper. “There is now an attempt to stop Sevan’s revival and he himself initiates that.”

Comparing Armenian and Azerbaijani opposition forces, “Hayots Ashkhar” says there are more radical groups in Azerbaijan than in Armenia that are gearing up for a revolution. “In Armenia, by contrast, there are now more opposition supporters of the constitutional reform path,” says the paper.

Opposition leader Vazgen Manukian tells “Hayots Ashkhar” in this regard that he is not against opposition participation in the August 29 parliamentary debates on constitutional reform. “I don’t attach great importance to that, though,” he says at the same time.

According to “Ayb-Fe,” the Armenian authorities will use opposition presence in the National Assembly to falsely claim that they have built political consensus for their constitutional reform.

“Aravot” quotes National Unity Party leader Artashes Geghamian as commenting on fellow oppositionist Aram Sarkisian’s latest call for a “revolution” in Armenia. Sarkisian told supporters late Wednesday that opposition leaders disagreeing with him “will cry out the word ‘revolution’ more loudly than we do one month later.” “One famous politician once said, ‘If a person is young but not a revolutionary, that means he is a bastard. If a person is elderly but not conservative that means he is an idiot,” says Geghamian. He says his party will not join Sarkisian’s calls for another campaign of anti-government demonstrations “for the time being.”

“Iravunk” believes that Sarkisian and his Hanrapetutyun party will not take “drastic actions” before the August 18 meeting of the Artarutyun alliance which should finally ascertain the bloc’s position on the draft constitutional amendments. The paper says Hanrapetutyun does not want to completely alienate its Artarutyun allies. “On the other hand, Hanrapetutyun needs to avoid earning the reputation of an alliance destroyer.” Sarkisian will therefore “wait until the last moment.” Besides, Artarutyun itself may adopt a “radical position” on the issue, concludes the paper.
