Srbuhi Galian was nominated for the post by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian last week. Her appointment was formally confirmed on November 5 with a decree signed by President Vahagn Khachaturian.
Galian, 32, previously served as deputy prosecutor general overseeing the coordination of functions related to illegal property confiscation. She took on this role in September 2020 after a year-long tenure as deputy minister of justice. From 2015 to 2019, Galian worked at Armenia’s Investigation Service.
Her appointment comes after the resignation of former justice minister Grigor Minasian on October 1. Minasian stepped down a week after more than a dozen pro-government lawmakers signed a petition calling on Pashinian to sack him. The lawmakers said then that, unlike Minasian, a brother of former President Serzh Sarkisian’s fugitive son-in-law Mikael Minasian, the new justice minister needed to have clear affiliations to the ruling party.
Reports indicate that Galian was selected from a shortlist of five candidates, which included Armenia’s representative for international legal issues Yeghishe Kirakosian and former acting chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council Gagik Jhangirian.
